Blue Frog provides early chemical safety and regulatory input for new substances, materials, formulations and related technologies. We help development teams identify potential concerns, challenge important assumptions and decide whether an opportunity merits more detailed SSbD assessment.

Our work is proportionate to the maturity of the concept. The objective is not to reach definitive conclusions from limited information. It is to identify issues that could influence candidate selection, technical development or the eventual route to market while there is still opportunity to respond.

 

Bringing Chemical Safety into Early Innovation

At the ideation stage, attention is naturally focused on technical function and commercial opportunity. However, the proposed chemistry, composition and uses may already indicate potential human health, environmental or regulatory challenges.

An early review can help determine whether these considerations are likely to be manageable, whether the innovation should be refined or whether a different direction warrants investigation.

Blue Frog considers the available information in the context of the intended function, foreseeable applications and relevant incumbent or alternative solutions. Where suitable information exists, we may also examine related substances or materials for early indications of potential concern.

 

Identifying Assumptions, Questions, Uncertainties...

Incomplete evidence is expected at this stage. Our role is to distinguish between uncertainties that are inherent in an emerging concept and those that could undermine its viability.

This may involve considering whether the substance or material presents obvious hazard concerns, whether its intended uses could result in significant exposure or whether the likely regulatory pathway could demand an unexpectedly extensive evidence package.

We also identify assumptions that need to be tested during formal SSbD scoping. This gives the development team a clearer view of what is known, what remains uncertain and what should happen next.

 

Comparing Innovations with Existing Solutions

SSbD requires an understanding of what the innovation is intended to improve.

We help define an appropriate comparator, such as an incumbent substance, material or technology. This provides an initial basis for considering whether the concept has credible potential to improve safety or sustainability without introducing significant disadvantages elsewhere.

At this stage, the comparison will usually be preliminary. Its purpose is to establish direction and define the questions for further assessment.
