The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is conducting a public consultation on the potential alternatives to Creosote as a wood preservative.
Creosote is classified as a Carcinogen Category 1B, Toxic for Reproduction Categories 1B and 2, and contains PBT (persistent, bio accumulative, and toxic) constituents. These classifications make it a "candidate for substitution" under Article 10(1) of the GB BPR, meaning it could be banned unless certain conditions are met.
The HSE is seeking stakeholder input on whether suitable alternatives exist—either chemical or non-chemical—that could reduce the risks associated with Creosote. The alternatives must be technically and economically feasible, and stakeholders are encouraged to provide detailed information with justifications.
Stakeholders, including manufacturers, users of biocidal products, and regulators, are urged to participate in the consultation process.
