PFAS, Here to Stay?

PFAS Building Blocks

11:30 to 11:45 - Thursday 22nd May - Stage 5

Most PFAS are persistent, some are hazardous, others aren't. Some PFAS are used in critical applications whereas other applications use PFAS as other materials don't perform as well but where alternatives may be available or potentially developed even if these alternatives may not be technically equivalent. Is the technical performance of PFAS always required? Has society, including the chemical industry, become dependent on PFAS without fully appreciating their impact on the environmental and sustainability? Are less critical PFAS applications needed to ensure availability for the essential ones? How do we decide between trivial, critical and essential applications and uses? Are all PFAS really the 'chemical devils' they are portrayed to be?

There are so many questions about PFAS and whether they have a viable future due to the developing regulatory landscape globally despite their many applications. A brief overview on current and developing EU and UK regulations will be shared along with an opinion on the direction of future regulation and applications of PFAS.

Speaker Bio: Martyn Shenton

Martyn is an expert in PFAS, Polymers and REACH at Blue Frog Scientific, with experience working under UK and EU regulations such as REACH, POPs, CWC and the developing PFAS regulatory landscape. Martyn is responsible for the management and delivery of projects for these sectors of the chemical industry. This includes supporting stakeholders as UK and EU PFAS and EU polymer REACH regulations evolve, the preparation and update of technical dossiers and supporting strategic planning to assist companies in navigating the ever-changing regulatory landscape.

Martyn is a chemist by training with a degree and D.Phil. from the University of York that had a focus on polymers and analysis. Following a post-doctoral position on polymers at the University of Surrey, Martyn moved to a fluoropolymer manufacturer where he held research, process and product safety/stewardship roles for over two decades.
